This is a story of my family: me, my father and my grandpa
May I take your attention for just a moment? This is not a pure company presentation but the story of my family: me, my father and my grandpa.
It all started in 1963 in the little village Jurva in Ostrobothnia province in southern West-Finland. My grandpa Eero made a decision: he sold all his cows, changed the barn into a workshop and started to make furniture like many other Jurva village inhabitants.
One evening with my father we were sitting down and thinking back of the different chapters in our company’s history. Father remembers how in his childhood, Monday mornings he was standing in home courtyard with his sisters waving to the taillights of his father’s pickup. Grandpa was again rushing to the furniture retailers around Finland, his van loaded full with sofas, chairs and dressers. Those were times as only a few salesmen from grandpa’s region did have the courage to go even further than the next biggest city Vaasa. My grandpa, on the contrary, went as far as to Copenhagen in order to get inspiration from different fairs.
He established a furniture company and always marched his own paths, just like my father and now myself after him.
My father took over the company from grandpa. He also drew around with sofas, even abroad where customers were pleased to pay a good price for high quality. In the meantime I was playing in the padding storage of our factory in Jurva. However, I never became a princess brought up in cotton wool!
When I was in the mature age of 15 I decided to become a designer. The dream of a teenager came indeed true when I was accepted to the Aalto University School of Arts and Design in Helsinki. As my experience increased thanks to my studies and working life, it all made me realize the same as my father did: sadly too many furniture workshops have been forced to close down in our home region.
It is hard to both of us to understand why the best quality ever in the world does not sell anymore. We don’t want to start to compete with cheap super markets. What we can do, however, is to put aside the great modesty, typical of our region, and convince our customers of high, long lasting quality and well-designed products. In Ostrobothnia, southern West-Finland among us the furniture manufacturers there is a saying “Wood is playdough to the Jurva craftsmen”. And yes, it indeed is to us, too!
When me, my father and grandpa gathered to family photograph on the field in Jurva village, the atmosphere was formal even though the local farmers were accomplishing their daily spring sowing nearby. Grandpa has been seriously ill for a long time already and I’m not so sure whether he understood why this photographing was arranged. As the photographer asked my father and grandpa to turn and look at me I saw a tear in grandpa’s eye. Yes, he understood.
Our story shall, however, not end on the fields in the Jurva village. Together with my father, skillful local carpenters as well as the most talented young Finnish designers we have decided to continue in Finnish Ostrobothnia province that work that grandpa started 50 years ago in his barn.
We will not give up, even in present most challenging times, but have, on the contrary, decided to proudly take our place in renewing and continuing the high quality carpentry tradition in Finland.
